- INTRODUCTION -
This poster art is an excerpt from a double-page spread that was published as part of the
RMIT Diploma of Graphic Design Semester 2 ‘Feels Like Yesterday’ publication.
My goal was to create an artwork that explored the big questions children often get asked
in a simple and accessible way.
As little kids, we’re often asked to explain how we feel despite being overwhelmed each day with new, unchartered experiences and a limited vocabulary that doesn't quite have the ability to explain
the big emotions going on in our bodies.
Adults also often repeatedly ask kids ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’
- a daunting, existential question and one that assumes you can only grow up to be one thing.
Despite all their big feelings, children only have a limited vocabulary in their early years when asked ‘How are you?’ - happy/good, I don’t know/ok, or sad/bad. In my artwork,
I choose to demonstrate this limitation in the three faces that are housed inside the YOU.
I wanted my poster to reflect a universal childhood experience, as well as get adults to reflect on their own ‘big feelings’ now that they have the words to express them, and perhaps ask themselves…
are you who you want to be now that you’ve ‘grown up’?
